Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the launch, calling it "the most powerful AI training cluster in the world." The facility, dubbed the "Gigafactory of Compute," started operations at around 4:20 a.m. local time - a time that's surely no coincidence for those familiar with Musk's sense of humor.

So, what's the big deal? Well, these 100,000 liquid-cooled H100 GPUs are specifically designed for AI model training, which requires an enormous amount of computing power. This cluster will be put to work training Grok 3, the next iteration of xAI's AI chatbot, scheduled for release by the end of the year.

While the Greater Memphis Chamber has welcomed xAI's presence, some locals have raised concerns about the facility's environmental impact. The Memphis Community Against Pollution, along with other environmental groups, has warned about the significant energy and water consumption of the computing facility. It's estimated that the site could use up to 150 megawatts of electricity per hour - enough to power about 100,000 homes!

Despite these concerns, xAI is moving full steam ahead. They've already posted job listings for various positions at the Memphis site, including network engineers and project managers.

It's worth noting that while Musk claims this is the world's most powerful AI training cluster, other tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Meta are also in the race, with Meta's Mark Zuckerberg planning to acquire 350,000 Nvidia H100s this year alone.

As AI development continues to accelerate, it's clear that the competition for computing power is heating up. We'll be keeping a close eye on how xAI's new supercomputing cluster performs and what innovations it might bring to the world of artificial intelligence.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the AI world!
